Wildlife is not scenery with a fence
Keep at least 100 yards from bears and wolves and at least 25 yards from other wildlife. Never approach for a photograph, feed an animal, or leave food unattended. Learn how to carry and use bear spray before entering habitat.
Water is a major hazard
Cold water, swift current, slippery rocks, and hidden drop-offs can be deadly. The park identifies water as its leading cause of fatalities. Use extra caution near rivers, waterfalls, lake edges, and during spring runoff.
A minimum day plan
- Exact route, trailhead, party members, vehicle, and expected return time.
- Weather and closure check close to departure.
- Layers and rain protection even when the valley is warm.
- Food, water, navigation, first aid, light, whistle, and emergency warmth.
- A turnaround time that protects daylight and return transportation.
