Whitefish is the strongest full-service base, but it is not automatically the best base for every park day. Short stays should place lodging near the exact park area being visited. Longer trips often benefit from splitting east and west.

The short answer
Choose lodging that reduces travel to the attractions, trailheads, lakes, scenic drives, or activities that matter most. Glacier is too large for every gateway to be equally convenient. A west-side base does not make Many Glacier or Two Medicine nearby.

Match the base to the highest-priority days
List the two or three experiences that would make the trip worthwhile, locate them on the map, and compare actual driving routes before booking. Travelers focused on Lake McDonald and the west side may value Apgar, West Glacier, Columbia Falls, or Whitefish. Travelers focused on Many Glacier, St. Mary, or Two Medicine should seriously consider east-side lodging or a split stay.
Driving distance changes the value of a room
Going-to-the-Sun Road is about 50 miles long, and the National Park Service estimates roughly two hours to drive it without stops. That estimate does not include peak traffic, parking searches, construction, wildlife delays, photographs, or temporary closures. A room that looks less convenient on a hotel list may save substantial driving when it is close to the next day's priority.
The short-stay exception
A traveler with very limited time and east-side priorities may gain more from staying at Glacier Park Lodge, St. Mary, or another appropriate east-side property than from commuting from Whitefish. Rental-car availability and transfers must be confirmed for the exact dates.
