Separate the season from a specific threat
The National Hurricane Center defines the Atlantic season dates and publishes official tropical outlooks, advisories, and forecasts. A seasonal label cannot tell you whether a storm will affect a particular week. The larger trend still matters: warmer seas fuel stronger hurricanes, while rising water increases the reach of storm surge in a place already barely above the sea.
Check the financial rules before a storm exists
- Read lodging, tour, flight, ferry, and rental-car cancellation terms.
- Confirm what travel insurance covers and excludes, including when coverage must be purchased.
- Do not assume a named storm automatically produces a refund.
- Keep medication, identification, and essential contacts accessible.
Evacuation is not optional trip advice
If officials order an evacuation, leave. This is not the moment to protect a vacation investment or wait for personal certainty. Transportation capacity and highway conditions can become constrained, and the same exposed geography that makes the drive memorable becomes a liability when many people must use it at once.
