Rain probability is not the main decision
A storm can miss one part of Sedona and still create dangerous runoff somewhere else. Heavy rain upstream can affect a drainage even when the sky at your location does not look severe. A daily weather icon also does not describe wind, lightning, hail, or the speed at which a storm develops.
Lightning requires shelter
The National Weather Service states that no outdoor location is safe when thunderstorms are nearby. Move to a substantial building or an enclosed metal-topped vehicle. A tree, rock overhang, open ramada, or shallow cave is not a safe substitute.
Flash flooding changes route selection
Do not enter a flooded road, wash, or low crossing. Avoid narrow drainages when storms threaten, and remember that fire scars can shed water and debris rapidly. Turn around before a route becomes difficult to exit.

- Keep an indoor or low-exposure alternative available.
- Check radar, warnings, and forest alerts before leaving reliable service.
- Follow closures and instructions from rangers, guides, and emergency officials.
